Email Monitoring
Print Each Email Alias to Its Own Printer
3 min read
One mailbox, six printers. Kitchen tickets should come out in the kitchen, invoices in the office, labels at the packing bench. You don't need six mailboxes for that.
Give each printer its own address, like kitchen@yourshop.com and office@yourshop.com, and have all of them deliver into the one mailbox AutoPrintEmail already watches. Then add one rule per address that picks the printer.
Table of Contents
Before you start
- Update to AutoPrintEmail 1.12.1 or newer from autoprint.email/download. Older builds don't have the Sent to contains condition.
- Set up the aliases in your email first. In Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 add them as aliases of the mailbox. On Gmail you can skip that and use plus addresses: mail to
orders+kitchen@gmail.comlands inorders@gmail.comwith no setup. - Send yourself a test to each alias and check it arrives in the watched mailbox.
Add one rule per printer
- Open the app, go to your email accounts and click Manage on the account.
- Open the Rules tab and click Add Rule.
- Name it after the printer, like "Kitchen".
- Leave When this matches on Print it.
- Change the condition to Sent to contains and type the full alias, for example
kitchen@yourshop.com. - Turn on Send this rule's matches to specific printers, click Add printer and pick the kitchen printer.
- Click Create Rule.
Repeat for each alias, then click Save Changes. Send one test email to each alias and check it comes out of the right printer.
Good to know
- Mail that matches no rule doesn't print. Once you have print rules, an email sent to the plain mailbox address with no alias is skipped. Add a rule for it if you want those printed too.
- Type the whole address. The match is "contains", so
printer1@would also catchprinter10@. The full address avoids that. - It checks every delivery address, not just the To line. Cc works too. An alias the sender put in Bcc usually matches as well, because most mail servers record the address they delivered to.
- Want one alias on two printers? Add both printers to that rule. Each gets its own copies setting.
- Skip rules still win. If a Don't print rule matches, the email is skipped even if an alias rule matches too.
