Why Emails Read on Phone Don't Print
A common question we get: "I received an email but it didn't print. What happened?"
The most likely reason is that the email was already read before AutoPrintEmail could process it.

How AutoPrintEmail Decides What to Print
AutoPrintEmail only prints unread emails. Here's why:
- When a new email arrives, it's marked as "unread" by your email provider
- AutoPrintEmail checks your inbox periodically (every few minutes)
- If it finds an unread email that matches your filters, it prints it
- After printing, the email is marked as "read" so it won't print again
This prevents the same email from printing multiple times.
The Phone Problem
Here's where things get tricky. If you:
- Receive an email on your phone
- Open and read it on your phone
- AutoPrintEmail checks your inbox
The email is already marked as "read" - so AutoPrintEmail skips it.
This happens because email read/unread status syncs across all your devices. When you read an email on your phone, your email provider (Gmail, Outlook, etc.) marks it as read everywhere.
Solutions
Option 1: Don't read emails on your phone (recommended)
If you need certain emails to always print, avoid reading them on your phone first. Let AutoPrintEmail process them, then read them wherever you want.
Option 2: Use filters to target specific senders
Set up filters in AutoPrintEmail to only print emails from specific senders or with specific subjects. This way, you can read other emails on your phone without worrying about missing prints.
Option 3: Mark emails as unread
If you accidentally read an email that should have printed:
- Go to your email client (Gmail, Outlook, etc.)
- Find the email and mark it as "unread"
- Wait for AutoPrintEmail's next check cycle
- The email will print
Why Not Print All Emails?
You might wonder: "Why not just print every email, regardless of read status?"
The problem is preventing duplicates. Without using read/unread status, AutoPrintEmail would need another way to track which emails have already been printed. The read/unread approach is:
- Simple and reliable
- Works across all email providers
- Doesn't require storing email history locally
Summary
AutoPrintEmail prints unread emails only. If you read an email on your phone before AutoPrintEmail processes it, the email won't print. To ensure important emails always print, avoid reading them on other devices first, or use filters to target specific emails.
