Print Every Web Order as a Pick Ticket

    6 min read

An order comes in. Someone at the PC opens the email, clicks print, and walks the slip over to the shelves. Then the next one. On a good day that is fifty trips to the same screen.

Here is the fix. Every shop platform already emails you each order. Send those emails to one inbox, connect that inbox to AutoPrintEmail on the computer at the pack bench, and each order prints itself as the pick ticket. The picker grabs it, walks the shelves, and it goes in the box.

    What you need

    • An inbox just for orders, like orders@yourshop.com, webshop@ or a Gmail account made for the job. Any Gmail, Microsoft 365 or IMAP mailbox works.
    • A computer near the pack bench, with the printer attached or on the same network. AutoPrintEmail prints from the computer it runs on, so that computer stays on during packing hours.
    • AutoPrintEmail installed on it. Sign up and add the inbox takes about two minutes.

Send every order email to that inbox

Each platform has a setting for where new-order notifications go. Add your orders inbox there.

    PlatformWhere to look
ShopifySettings > Notifications > Staff order notifications, add the orders address as a recipient
WooCommerceWooCommerce > Settings > Emails > New order > Recipient(s). Step by step
BigCommerceSettings > Order notifications, add the orders address
eBayOrder emails go to the address on your eBay account. Forward them to the orders inbox, or connect that mailbox directly

Menus move around. If yours looks different, search the platform's help for "order notification email".

Sell on more than one platform? Send them all to the same inbox. Wholesale order forms and emailed purchase orders can go there too.

Connect the inbox and pick the pack-bench printer

    1. Add the orders inbox as an account in AutoPrintEmail. Here's how if you haven't done it before.
    2. On the Mailboxes step, keep Inbox ticked.
    3. On the printer step, pick the printer at the pack bench.
    4. Set Copies to how many slips you want per order. One for the box, two if the picker keeps one.
    5. Click Save & Start Monitoring.

Place a test order, or forward an old order email to the inbox. It should print within about a minute.

Print the body, or just the attachment

Order emails from Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce have the order in the email itself, not in an attachment. So for those, keep Print message body on. That is the pick ticket.

Two toggles to check on the account's Print tab, under Manage:

    • Print images: turn it off. The shop logo and product thumbnails travel as image attachments, and with this on each can come out on its own page.
    • Print attachments and Print PDFs: leave them on. Some senders attach the order as a PDF instead, like wholesale forms and shipping tools. With these on, the PDF prints and the body prints too. If a sender's body is just "see attached", turn the body off for that account. See Print Only the PDF Attachments.

Click Save Changes when you are done.

Skip the shop's own marketing and summary emails

The orders inbox will get more than orders. Platforms send daily summaries, payout notices, abandoned-checkout reports and app announcements to the same address. You don't want those at the pack bench.

The clean way is one print rule, so only order emails print:

    1. Open a real order email and note the part of the subject that never changes. Shopify's say "Order #" followed by the number; WooCommerce's say "New order".
    2. Click Manage on the account, open Rules and click Add Rule.
    3. Name it "Orders" and keep When this matches on Print it.
    4. Add the condition Subject contains with that text. Selling on several platforms? Add one condition per platform and keep Match ANY condition.
    5. Click Create Rule, then Save Changes.

Once you have a print rule, emails that match no rule are skipped. So the summaries and newsletters stop without you listing them one by one. If a stray one still prints, add a Don't print it rule for its sender. How rules work together.

    What the slip looks like

Each order comes out as one sheet, or more if the order is long: the sender, subject and date at the top, then the order exactly as the platform laid it out in the email. Order number, items and quantities, the shipping address, and the customer's note if there is one.

    • Paper size is on the Print tab: A4 or Letter for an office printer.
    • Printing on a receipt printer at the bench? Set the page size to the roll width. See Set Up an 80mm or 58mm Thermal Receipt Printer.
    • Lost a slip? Find the order under Recent Prints on the dashboard and click Reprint.

    Tips

    • One inbox per printer. Two pack benches, two printers? The simplest setup is two orders inboxes, each connected on the computer by its own printer. Or keep one mailbox and give each printer its own alias, then route by address. See Print Each Email Alias to Its Own Printer.
    • Staff read orders on their phones? By default AutoPrintEmail only prints unread emails. If someone opens an order on their phone before it prints, it gets skipped. Untick Only print unread emails on the Print tab so every order prints regardless. Why that happens.
    • On Shopify? You can also use the AutoPrintEmail app inside Shopify, which prints packing slips and labels from the order itself the moment it is paid, no email needed. See Set Up AutoPrintEmail for Shopify. The email route above still works alongside it and is the way to go for every other platform.
    • Keep the computer awake. A sleeping PC prints nothing until it wakes, then prints the backlog. See Windows or Mac.
    • The order email is downloaded by the computer at the bench and printed there. It never passes through our servers.
